Description
Two mid-19th century leather bound volumes titled Piety Promoted: In a Collection of Dying Sayings of Many of the People Called Quakers, edited by William Evans and Thomas Evans and published in Philadelphia in 1854 for sale at Friends’ Book Store, No. 84 Arch Street. These volumes represent part of the well-known Quaker devotional series documenting the spiritual reflections and final testimonies of members of the Society of Friends. The spines are labeled Piety Promoted Vol. II and Vol. III and the books are bound in period full leather with gilt spine lettering. Each volume measures approximately 7.5 x 5 x 1.5 inches. Interiors remain generally clean with scattered foxing consistent with age and one volume contains an early handwritten ownership inscription reading Frederick Farrand. Bindings show expected rubbing and light wear but remain structurally sound. An appealing pair of mid-19th century Quaker theological and devotional works reflecting the religious history and spiritual writings of the Society of Friends.
