Description

Two antique leather bound volumes titled Barclay’s Works, containing the writings of Robert Barclay, an important early Quaker theologian, published in Philadelphia in 1831 by Benjamin C. Stanton and printed by Thomas Kite. The books include Truth Triumphant and related theological writings concerning Quaker doctrine and religious disputes, including an account of debates between divinity students at the University of Aberdeen and the people called Quakers. Both volumes are bound in period marbled leather with red and black spine labels reading Barclay’s Works with volume numbers I and III visible. Each book measures approximately 8.75 x 5.75 x 2 inches. The interiors show scattered foxing and age toning consistent with early 19th century printing. One volume contains an early handwritten inscription dated 1831 referencing George Robinson, Studham, and Frederick Harraud, suggesting early ownership or provenance. The bindings show expected wear, rubbing, and edge wear but remain structurally sound. An attractive and historically significant early American printing of the works of Robert Barclay, a foundational figure in Quaker religious thought.
