Lot 145:
Description
Antique J.H. Colton’s School Atlas designed to accompany Colton’s American School Geography, published by Ivison, Phinney & Co. of New York and also listing S.C. Griggs & Co. of Chicago, featuring numerous engraved maps intended for classroom instruction during the mid-19th century. The atlas retains its original printed paper boards with cloth spine and measures approximately 14 by 12 inches. J.H. Colton was one of the most important American map publishers of the 19th century, producing widely used educational atlases and geographic works. This example shows heavy wear to the covers with staining, edge wear, and surface abrasions consistent with school use, along with interior age toning and scattered ib4323 marks including period doodles on the inside pages, but the volume remains an interesting and authentic example of early American educational cartography.
