Lot 144:
Description
Collection of eight 19th century cased photographs, including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, housed in period leather, thermoplastic, and union cases with decorative embossed designs and velvet interiors. The lot includes portrait images of Victorian-era sitters such as women in period dress, a hand-colored portrait of a young child, and a double portrait of two young women, all displayed behind gilt brass mats typical of mid-19th century photographic presentation. Case sizes range approximately 3 x 2 inches, 3 x 3.75 inches, and 3.5 x 4.5 inches, reflecting common sixth-plate and ninth-plate formats. Condition varies with age including surface spotting, typical oxidation, minor case wear, and velvet interior wear, but the group remains an attractive assortment of early American photographic portraiture dating roughly 1850–1865, offering strong decorative and historical appeal.
