Lot 120:
Description
Pair of early 19th century Staffordshire blue transferware hot water warming plates in the desirable Chinese Juvenile Sports pattern produced by Ralph Stevenson & Son of Cobridge, Staffordshire, England, circa 1830–1845. Each plate features a detailed chinoiserie scene of children engaged in traditional games within a stylized Asian landscape surrounded by an elaborate floral and scroll border. The reverse bears the printed cartouche mark reading “Chinese Juvenile Sports” with pattern designation “H.” These plates were designed as warming dishes, with a hollow body accessible through the corked opening along the rim allowing hot water to be added to keep food warm at the table during service. Both retain their original porcelain stoppers and measure approximately 10.5 inches in diameter. Condition shows typical age-related wear including light staining and glaze wear consistent with early 19th century Staffordshire transferware. A handsome and increasingly scarce form appealing to collectors of early English transferware and historic dining accessories.
