Description
Antique leather bound copy of The Pilgrim’s Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come by John Bunyan, one of the most important and widely read works of Christian devotional literature first published in the 17th century and regarded as one of the most influential allegorical works in English religious writing. This edition includes Bunyan’s authenticated third part titled “The Travels of the Ungodly, ” collated with early editions and accompanied by illustrative notes by The Rev. Robert Philip, author of Bunyan’s Life and Times and other theological works. The volume was published in London by George Virtue with a New York imprint for R. Martin & Co., reflecting the widespread transatlantic readership of Bunyan’s writings during the 19th century. The book is attractively bound in full brown leather with raised bands and decorative gilt tooling to the spine, the title “Pilgrim’s Progress” prominently stamped in gilt. Interior pages show typical age toning and scattered foxing consistent with a 19th century publication while the binding remains solid and displays well. A classic and highly collectible Christian allegory that has remained continuously in print for over three centuries, making this an appealing addition for collectors of antique religious books, theological works, and decorative leather bound library volumes.
