Description

Offered here is a two-volume set of Journal of the Life, Labours, and Travels of Thomas Shillitoe, published in London in 1839 by Harvey and Darton, Gracechurch Street. This example is the Second Edition, complete in two volumes as issued. Thomas Shillitoe (1754–1836) was a prominent English Quaker minister whose travels and religious labors took him throughout Europe and beyond in service of the Gospel. His journals provide firsthand accounts of early 19th-century religious movements, social conditions, and missionary efforts, making this work an important primary source within Quaker history. Both volumes retain their period brown cloth bindings with gilt spine titles reading Journal of Thomas Shillitoe, Vol. I and Vol. II. Interiors are clean and legible with expected light foxing and age toning consistent with 19th-century printing. Of particular interest, this set contains period handwritten ownership inscriptions, including: “Eliza Robinson from her affectionate Aunt Mary Stevens” “Frederick Farrand” An accompanying handwritten letter referencing the journal These provenance elements add personal historical context and enhance the desirability of the set for collectors of early religious works and manuscript-associated material. A solid and attractive 19th-century religious two-volume set with documented family provenance — well suited for collectors of Quaker history, theological works, or early London imprints.
