Description
Antique hand-painted Eastern Orthodox icon on wooden panel, measuring approximately 16.5 x 22 inches. The icon depicts a haloed bishop saint—likely St. Nicholas—robed in traditional episcopal vestments and holding a Gospel book. Christ and the Virgin appear in medallions at either shoulder, a classic iconographic detail associated with St. Nicholas receiving his bishopric authority. Executed in tempera over a gesso ground with a gilt background, the surface displays rich, time-softened tones and visible age throughout. Scattered paint loss, surface wear, craquelure, and edge chipping are consistent with devotional use and age. The multi-board wooden panel back shows traditional horizontal battens and an old hanging wire.
